SUMMARY:From Risk to Response: Advancing Suicide Prevention Care
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nDate & Location\nThursday, December 3, 2026, 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM MT, Kem C. Gardner Transformation Center, Murray, UT\nTarget Audience\nSpecialties – Behavioral Health\nProfessions – Advanced Practice Provider, Clinical Social Worker, Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse-Clinical, Physician, Physician Assistant, Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Social Worker\n\nCredits\nAMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (4.25 hours), Non-Physician Participation AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (4.25 hours)\nOverview\nSuicide prevention requires both a deeper understanding of risk and the reliable delivery of evidence-based care. This continuing education activity brings together emerging suicide prevention research and practical clinical skill development to support implementation of Intermountain Health’s Suicide Prevention Care Pathway. Participants will learn about research examining electronic health records, demographic and environmental factors, familial risk, and genetic differences to better understand suicide mortality risk, including risk among individuals with and without previously identified suicidality. The program will then translate the science of risk into clinical action, with a focus on delivering the Safety Planning Intervention (SPI) with fidelity. Through evidence review, clinical examples, and applied learning, participants will strengthen skills for developing collaborative, personalized, and actionable safety plans that patients can use during periods of suicidal crisis. Emphasis will be placed on the clinical practices that make safety planning an intervention rather than simply a completed form, including understanding the crisis narrative, identifying meaningful warning signs and coping strategies, engaging social and professional supports, addressing environmental safety, exploring reasons for living, and reviewing the plan for usability and follow-up. These elements align closely with Intermountain’s current SPI training and clinical best-practice guidance. Purpose: To strengthen caregiver knowledge, confidence, and competency in translating suicide prevention science into reliable, compassionate, evidence-based care for patients experiencing suicide risk.\nObjectives\n\nDescribe emerging evidence regarding clinical, demographic, environmental, familial, and genetic factors associated with suicide mortality and discuss implications and limitations for clinical suicide prevention.\nDifferentiate suicide risk identification and risk formulation from prediction of suicide death and describe how these functions fit within a suicide prevention care pathway.\nExplain the evidence and clinical rationale supporting collaborative Safety Planning Intervention for individuals experiencing suicide risk.\nDemonstrate core SPI fidelity behaviors, including eliciting a crisis narrative, identifying personalized warning signs and coping strategies, developing social and professional supports, addressing environmental safety, and exploring reasons for living.\nApply the Intermountain suicide care pathway to translate positive suicide-risk identification into appropriate assessment, intervention, and follow-up.\n\nJoin us in person at the location most convenient for you! When registering, select the site you plan to attend to ensure lunch is ordered for you. All locations will participate together for the first portion of the conference, then practice their skills locally with their colleagues.\n\nKem C.
