UAFP Awards
The Utah Academy of Family Physicians is made up of physicians, residents, and medical students who go above and beyond their call of duty. Each individual provides a very important component to their community and to the people they serve.
Each year, UAFP presents the following awards:
Family Medicine Physician of the Year
The Family Medicine of the Year Award recognizes a physician who provides their patient with compassionate, comprehensive, and caring family medicine on a continuing basis. This physician is directly and effectively involved in community affairs and activities that enhance the quality of their community. They provide a credible role model, both professionally and personally, to their community, to other health professionals, and to residents and medical students. This chosen physician effectively represents UAFP and the specialty of Family Medicine by presenting a good public image and exemplifying the family physician’s leadership role in improving the health of our state.
Eligibility Criteria
- Is a member of the UAFP and AAFP
- Is currently in practice
- Spends at least 50% of his/her time in direct patient care
- Be Board Certified in Family Medicine and/or an AAFP fellow
- Has been in practice as an attending physician for at least seven (7) years.
Limitations
Current members of the UAFP Executive Committee and previous recipients of the award are NOT eligible.
How Winner is Selected
Nominations are announced and accepted for several weeks during the summer.
Nominations may be made by any UAFP member, family medicine residency program, department of family medicine, or community individual at any time during the year.
Nominations submitted within the previous three years by July 31 each year will be considered for that year's award.
The winner is voted on by the UAFP Executive Committee.
The winner is announced at the annual member meeting in the fall.
2024 Family Medicine
Physician of the Year

Utah Family Medicine Champion of the Year
The Family Medicine Champion of the Year Award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to increasing the level of advocacy for family medicine on the local, state, or national level and has exemplified courage and empathy for patients, and demonstrated leadership, commitment and dedication to the cause of advocating for family medicine and primary care on behalf of patients.
Eligibility Criteria
- Advocacy must focus primarily on Utah-based family medicine issues.
Limitations
Previous recipients of the award are NOT eligible.

Nominations are announced and accepted for several weeks during the summer.
Nominations may be made by any UAFP member, family medicine residency program, department of family medicine, or community individual.
The winner is voted on by the UAFP Advocacy Committee.
The winner is announced at the annual member meeting in the fall.
2024 UAFP Family Medicine
Champion of the Year
Representative Marsha Judkins
Resident Leadership Award
The Resident Leadership was award was established in 2021 to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of our family medicine residents in Utah. The award will be given to a 3rd year resident who demonstrates promotion of family medicine, leadership skills, acts as a role model to peers, and shows leadership in the residency and/or the community.
Additional consideration will be given to those who excel in any the following:
- Teaching skills
- Professionalism
- Research skills
- Community service
How Winner is Selected
Nominations are announced and accepted for several weeks each spring.
Nominations may be made by individuals who have knowledge of the nominee’s accomplishments including faculty, residency staff, fellow residents, and medical students. A nominee must be a resident member of UAFP and a current 3rd year resident at a family medicine residency in Utah. Nomination will be cleared by the residency director to ensure eligibility.
The winner is voted on by the UAFP Member Engagement Committee.
The winner is announced in the spring at the venue of the residency's choosing.
2024 UAFP Resident Leadership Award

Outstanding Senior Awards
Each spring, UAFP partners with the medical schools in Utah to award an Outstanding Senior award to a graduating senior who has matched into family medicine. The winner from each school demonstrates outstanding leadership and scholarly accomplishments in the field of family medicine, has shown evidence of active student leadership in family medicine activities, and has demonstrated evidence of superior scholastic achievement in overall medical school studies and particularly in the field of family medicine.
How Winners are Selected
Each school determines the process by which the winner is selected.
Winners are announced in the spring after Match Day.
