UAFP member, Dr. Sarah Woolsey, was recently honored with the MIGUEL SILVA LEADERSHIP AWARD 2019. This award is in honor of Miguel Silva, who was a dearly loved member of the Tobacco Prevention and Control Programs team. Miguel was the Disparity Outreach Coordinator. This award is given in Miguel’s memory and for his love of service and is for a group or individual who has demonstrated excellent leadership skills in bringing a team, partners or community members together to further the cause of tobacco prevention and control in Utah.
Dr. Woolsey’s nomination reads, “Dr. Woolsey has been a key partner in Utah’s tobacco cessation efforts for years. Through her leadership as a member of the Utah Tobacco-Free Alliance, she has mobilized several local health departments (LHDs) in providing trainings to doctors and other healthcare professionals throughout the state. This is a daunting task for many LHDs: to come in as a government bureaucrat and try to tell highly educated people how to do their jobs takes a lot of courage. Dr. Woolsey instills confidence in those with whom she partners and even offers to co-present with them, which, as a practicing physician, provides that extra boost of credibility that helps make these presentations a success. Due to her efforts, the state has seen a steady increase over the years in the number of Quit Line referrals coming from medical providers.”
