Practical Derm: Build your skills in skin, hair, and nails

A course that presents practical dermatology training for primary care in a full day, in-person, CME accredited conference hosted by our very own UHealth Dermatologists.   Join us to celebrate the 16th year of this course on May 29, 2026 at the University of Utah Salt Lake City Campus.

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

To provide reputable and practical information concerning diagnosis and management of common skin disorders to primary care physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This course is designed primarily for people that have not taken this course before, although if never hurts given the yearly format.  It is for family medicine and general internal medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, residents and medical students interested in an up-to-date review of current dermatology topics.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE

One of our Department’s educational missions is to provide outreach to all health care providers who deal with patient skin problems in the primary care setting. A key component of this effort has been the establishment of a one day CME course entitled Practical Derm that has been held annually during the spring at the University of Utah since 1999. This course has been received very warmly by its attendees.

As a result of attending this activity, a person in the audience should:

  1. Be able to more accurately diagnose and manage common dermatologic disorders encountered in patients seen in a primary care setting.
  2. Be able to perform basic skin biopsy and suturing techniques within the scope of the primary care setting.
  3. Be able to better employ different skin biopsy techniques.
  4. Be able to better interpret and apply the reported results of skin biopsies.
  5. Be able to better understand how skin biopsy findings can be interpreted differently by board-certified dermatopathologists and other pathologists.
  6. More easily recognize when patients are good candidates for referral.

IS THIS COURSE ACCREDITED?

Yes, this course is CME accredited through the University of Utah’s Continuing Medical Education Department.   Although exact information can be found on the CME tab, this conference yields 7 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
