Member of the Month – June: Steve Harmon

Practice: Working in Ivan‘s Utah family medicine with an emphasis in G.I. issues like IBS, chronic abdominal pain.

Residency: Boise Idaho and a rural track in Jerome/Twin Falls Idaho

A bit about Dr. Harmon: I grew up in Taylorsville, Utah in a middle class family. I served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and then married my wife who also grew up in the area. I graduated from the University of Utah, with a BA in biology and then attended medical school in Oklahoma. What took me into medicine was love of science, and wanting to do something meaningful with my life. My current interests are spending time with my family – I have five children. I also like learning new things and developing myself as a person. I have a side company that makes protein shakes that I created for people with IBS. I am passionate about trying to put control of people’s health back in their lives. I enjoy doing anything that my kids are involved with – outdoor activities, of course here in southern Utah.

What do you wish you’d known when you graduated from medical school? A better understanding of the business of medicine. Medicine, I believe, suffers in part because physicians do not run the business of medicine.

What keeps you passionate about family medicine? The genuine patient interactions and learning about humans. People and community make life rewarding and worth while. Studying humans, I argue the most complex creature on earth, is a fun and exciting field of knowledge.

Where will we find you on your day off? In Washington county spending time as a short order cook for my kids.

What are you…
