Member of the Month – September: Emily Chin

Practice: I currently practice in an urgent care setting at the InstaCares through Intermountain. Even though it’s an acute care environment, I feel very fortunate that our clinics are equipped with strong support systems. This includes the ability to obtain advanced imaging like CTs, labwork, and also allows us to reach out to care managers who help coordinate follow-ups, arrange primary care visits, and facilitate referrals to specialists. We also utilize TeleEM, a service that connects patients with emergency medicine physicians when appropriate, which has been cost-effective for both patients and the healthcare system by reducing unnecessary ER visits.
Residency: University of Utah
A bit about Dr. Chin: I’m a native Texan who grew up in a suburban city outside of Dallas and completed both my undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Texas at Dallas. I went on to earn my medical degree at VCOM–Auburn and moved to Salt Lake City to complete my training with my non-medical partner, Ryan, where we were drawn to the mountains. My medical interests include women’s health, primary care transformation issues, healthcare advocacy, and global health. Outside of medicine, I enjoy hot yoga, volleyball, climbing, skiing, flying drones, traveling and Couchsurfing, and trying new hole-in-the-wall restaurants.
What do you wish you’d known when you graduated from medical school? It’s easy to burn out in the medical field, and finding a good work-life balance early on helps you stay grounded. In the long run, it makes you a more present and effective physician.
Where will we find you on your day off? On my days off, I like a mix of adventure and downtime. You first will find me sleeping in, then likely looking for a new place to explore or dine out with my partner Ryan, and then perhaps taking a nice hike outdoors or going to concerts if I still have energy afterwards.
What are you…
