Preparing for the 2026 Legislative Session: Why Family Physicians’ Voices Matter More Than Ever

UAFP is preparing for another impactful Utah legislative session, and the months ahead will shape policies that directly affect family physicians, patients, and the health of our communities. At a time when health care policy is increasingly complex and rapidly evolving, it is more important than ever for family physicians to have a strong, informed voice at the Capitol.

Family physicians bring a uniquely valuable perspective to policymaking. You see firsthand how legislation impacts patient access, continuity of care, public health outcomes, and the sustainability of the physician workforce. When lawmakers hear directly from practicing physicians, policies are more likely to reflect the realities of care delivery in Utah. UAFP is committed to ensuring those voices are heard—and we invite you to be part of that work.

There are several ways UAFP members can engage in advocacy this year, whether you are new to policy work or ready to take on a more active role.

Join the UAFP Legislative Advocacy Committee
The Legislative Advocacy Committee plays a central role in shaping UAFP’s policy priorities and advocacy strategy. Committee members help review legislation, provide clinical insight, and guide the Academy’s positions during the session. Participation offers an opportunity to collaborate with colleagues, deepen your understanding of state health policy, and have a direct influence on UAFP’s advocacy efforts.

Attend a personalized advocacy training at the Capitol
UAFP also offers in-person, small-group advocacy trainings at the Utah State Capitol with Maryann Martindale. These personalized sessions allow participants to see the legislative process in action, learn how to navigate the Capitol, and practice effective advocacy strategies in a real-world setting. Participants can choose a date that fits their schedule, making this one of the most practical and engaging ways to learn how Utah’s lawmaking process works.

Build advocacy skills through our online Healthcare Advocacy Training
For members who prefer to learn at their own pace, UAFP’s online Healthcare Advocacy Training provides a flexible introduction to health policy and physician advocacy. The training covers the fundamentals of how legislation is made, effective communication with policymakers, and how physicians can engage in advocacy in meaningful and time-efficient ways. This option is ideal for those looking to build confidence before stepping into more active advocacy roles.

As the upcoming legislative session approaches, UAFP encourages all members to consider how they can get involved. Advocacy is a critical part of protecting the practice of family medicine and advancing policies that support patients and public health. Whether you engage online, in committee work, or at the Capitol, your voice makes a difference.
