Coalition Invites Utah Physicians to Sign Open Letter Regarding Proposed ICE Detention Facility
A coalition of Utah-based healthcare professionals, Concerned Utah Health Providers, is inviting physicians and advanced practice providers across the state to consider signing onto an open letter expressing concern about the proposed ICE detention facility in northwest Salt Lake City.
Concerned Utah Health Providers is a cross-specialty group of physicians and APPs focused on addressing potential healthcare and public health implications associated with the proposed facility. The coalition cites concerns related to documented conditions in detention centers nationwide, including environmental health and safety violations, infectious disease risks, mental health consequences, strain on local emergency systems, and broader impacts on healthcare access for immigrant communities.
The open letter outlines concerns including:
- Risks of communicable disease outbreaks in detention settings and surrounding communities
- Potential strain on Utah healthcare systems and emergency response services
- Mental health impacts on detained individuals
- Concerns about continuity of care for vulnerable populations, including children, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses
- Broader public health consequences tied to fear of seeking medical care in immigrant communities
The coalition has already gathered approximately 100 healthcare provider signatures and continues to expand outreach efforts. They also hold regular meetings on Mondays for those interested in becoming more involved.
